Altro Cleaning Guide

Altro floors are often used in places where safety, durability and hygiene routines matter.

You might see them in schools, clinics, changing areas, kitchens, toilets, corridors and other commercial spaces. These floors are designed for demanding use, but they still need the right cleaning approach.

The important point is simple: a safety floor should not be treated like a decorative domestic vinyl floor.

Quick Answer

Altro and similar safety floors can often be professionally cleaned when the problem is soil, residue, grease or embedded contamination.

The cleaning method should be chosen after assessment. It should not promise repair, replacement, renewed certification or guaranteed slip performance unless those claims are properly evidenced.

Why Altro Floors Become Hard To Clean

Safety flooring can hold soil in the surface texture.

Common causes of dull or dirty-looking Altro floors include:

  • detergent residue
  • grease and food soil
  • entrance grit
  • mop build-up
  • old maintenance products
  • heavy foot traffic
  • incorrect daily cleaning
  • worn or damaged areas

In busy commercial spaces, the floor can still look grey after mopping because soil has settled into the texture rather than sitting loosely on the surface.

Professional Cleaning Boundaries

Professional cleaning may improve:

  • ingrained soil
  • greasy residue
  • dull traffic lanes
  • sticky patches
  • surface-level staining
  • old product build-up

It cannot fix every issue.

Cleaning is not the same as repairing a damaged floor, replacing failed flooring, changing the surface design or certifying slip performance. Where there are safety, compliance or manufacturer questions, the floor should be assessed carefully and manufacturer guidance should be followed.

Site Planning

Commercial safety floor cleaning should be planned around how the building is used.

Useful questions include:

  • Which areas are most heavily used?
  • Are there kitchens, toilets or wet areas?
  • Can access be phased?
  • How quickly must the area reopen?
  • Is the floor affected by grease or product residue?
  • Are there damaged seams, lifted edges or worn patches?

Access and drying time matter because these floors are often in areas people need to keep using.

When To Be Cautious

Extra caution is needed where:

  • the floor is damaged
  • slip performance is being questioned
  • there are installation defects
  • previous products have left a coating
  • the floor is heavily worn
  • hygiene or compliance claims are involved

In those cases, cleaning may still be useful, but it should be described honestly.
